Your cat or dog is important to you and you do everything you can to ensure your pet has a good life. You provide for your cat or dog as best as you can, however, sometimes life is just stressful for a cat or dog.

Your cat or dog may experience stress as a result of environmental factors. Change can be hard for your cat or dog. . A new home, new family members (including other pets), thunderstorms, fireworks, a visit to the kennel or getting lost in an unfamiliar area can all cause stress for your cat or dog. When your cat or dog becomes removed from the comfortable environment you provide, or that environment changes, your pet may feel stress.

Stress causes a rise in a cat or dog’s physiological state. The heart rate increases, breathing becomes heavy and the cat or dog may begin to quiver or shake. Your cat or dog’s “Fight or flight” instincts can kick in, which might be dangerous, as they try to avoid the perceived danger. Your cat or dog may pace the house, hide out, be excessively vocal and become restless. You know your pet the best, so be sure to watch for unusual behaviours that could be the result of your cat or dog being stressed. Stress can be the result of seemingly small environmental changes; it’s up to you to make sure your cat or dog is adjusting properly.

What can you do to treat stress in your cat or dog?

Be Consistent

While some changes just can’t be avoided, your cat or dog will appreciate a consistent routine. If, for example, you are suddenly away from home at different hours than usual, your cat or dog may become stressed.

Getting exercise is a healthy stress relief for you and your cat or dog! Going for regular walks or runs will release endorphins in your cat or dog’s brain, causing a greater feeling of happiness and wellness. It’s great relief for you too!

Stay Busy

Getting a scratching post for your cat or a chew toy for your dog can also be helpful. This can divert your pet’s attention from whatever is causing stress and help avoid potentially destructive behaviours.

Love Your Cat or Dog

Of course this is an easy one for you! When we get stressed we like to have others pay attention to us as well, your cat or dog will probably appreciate some petting or a treat before you leave them. You should be careful to ensure that your pet isn’t comfortable only in your presence.
